Annual Theme: Pursuit of Truth

In the relentless pursuit of truth, the sub-theme ‘Beginner’s Mind’ for Myoju 95 emerges as a guiding light, casting its illumination upon the path to enlightenment. Grounded in the spirit of curiosity and unburdened by preconceived notions, this mindset transforms the journey into a profound exploration. Much like a novice approaching a new endeavour with eagerness, embracing the Beginner’s Mind opens doors to fresh insights and genuine understanding. By shedding the weight of assumptions, one rediscovers the beauty of innocence in each moment. It is a conscious choice to navigate the labyrinth of existence with humility and openness.

The pursuit of truth becomes a dance between curiosity and revelation, where simplicity fosters profound wisdom. On the canvas of life, Beginner’s Mind paints a portrait of continual discovery, inviting us to uncover universal truths with the wonder and openness of a beginner.

In life’s grand tapestry, the theme of contribution enriches our very essence.

Through it, we find a delicate balance between attachment and non-gaining.

Attachment, a natural inclination, often blinds us to the beauty of giving. The pursuit of possessions can imprison us in desire’s cycle, leaving us unsatisfied. Shifting from

acquiring to contributing unlocks profound fulfillment. Sharing our time, knowledge,

or resources frees us from attachment, embracing purpose.

Non-gaining isn’t about renouncing ambition but realising wealth lies in giving, not accumulating. When we give, we receive in the richness of hearts and souls,

not material possessions. ‘Contribution’ has been the chosen theme for Jikishoan in 2023, representing the currency of kindness and an investment in a better world. It goes beyond selfishness, nurturing connections and fostering compassion, creating a lasting legacy that resonates through the lives it touches.

Let us gracefully move to the harmonious rhythm of contribution. In giving, we

discover receiving, and in selflessness, we find the path to enduring fulfillment.

In a world emphasising individualism, contribution often goes unnoticed.

Yet, it is vital for the growth, success, and sustainability of communities, organisations, and groups. This edition of Myoju further explores the theme of contribution and delves into being a member, recognising its potential to shape individuals and the collective.

Teishin Shona Innes, a Jikishoan member since 2005, shares her insights in the feature article ‘Feeding the Fire: A Journey of Practice and Discovery’, highlighting the Zen training in Japan, and the benefits of being a contributing member. Her monastic ordination led her to channel passion and effort towards monastic routine practices, realising the impact of actions on the greater good. This sense of purpose and direction brings profound fulfilment beyond individualism.

Being a contributing member transforms lives and nurtures communities. As we explore this theme, we uncover the power of collective efforts and the value of everyone’s contribution.

Together, we can create a world where the spirit of contribution is cherished and celebrated.
