Membership Information
 
Jikishoan Zen Buddhist Community offers different levels of membership for those interested in supporting the practice of Zen Buddhism in Australia with Ekai Korematsu Osho.

Jikishoan has three membership categories (Member, Ordained Member and Honorary Member) and one affiliation category (Friend).
 
Members, non-members and friends are all able to attend Jikishoan's activities and public events.

Membership Application

To be eligible for membership:

  • Complete an Integrated Buddhist Studies course or participate in twelve Sanzenkai sessions. Ekai Osho may also recommend membership.
  • Meet with a member of the Jikishoan Committee who will discuss Jikishoan's Aims and Objectives with you and explain how the community functions.
  • Complete a Membership Application Form and give to the Committee member at the time of your meeting.

Next steps:

  • The Committee member will forward your application to Committee for consideration at the next Committee meeting.
  • Applicants will be advised of the outcome and, if approved, invited to pay the relevant annual subscription.
  • On receipt of the annual subscription, your name will be entered into the membership register and will also be published in the next issue of the Jikishoan's membership magazine, Myoju.
The Member category forms the core membership of Jikishoan. Members support Jikishoan's Aims and Objectives as set out in the Rules of Association (see bottom of this page). Members have full voting rights and may nominate for election to the Jikishoan Committee.

Members are encouraged to become part of a ryo group and participate in the organisational life of Jikishoan as part of their practice.

Members are able to participate in all Jikishoan acivities and receive fee reductions for retreats, workshops and courses. Members may also borrow from the library at the Footscray zendo.

Members receive Myoju (the quarterly Jikishoan magazine), as well as regular mail-outs of the calendar, teaching program, brochures and other information about community events and activities.
 
The Ordained Member category is reserved for members of Jikishoan who have taken the sixteen Bodhisattva Precepts, Kesaya and Oryoki, given by Jikishoan's main teacher or abbot to the novice monk or lay teacher trainee.
 
The Honorary Member category is reserved for Jikishoan's main teacher or abbot.

Membership Fee Schedule

Entrance Fee                 $50 one off

Member                         $110 per year (or 50% by 31 July & 50% by 31 December)

Member (Concession)   $90 per year (or 50% by 31 July & 50% by 31 December)

Ordained Member          $165 per year

Members may elect to pay the concession rate if they are unemployed, full-time students, pensioners or for other reasons which make payment of the full rate difficult. Members may voluntarily nominate themselves to this rate based upon their personal circumstances.

Members are invited to renew their membership at 1 July each year.


Friendship Information

The Friend category is for people with a general interest in Zen Buddhism who would like to support Jikishoan or Ekai Korematsu Osho, without necessarily participating in ongoing Jikishoan activities. Friends are not members of Jikishoan and do not have voting rights.

Friends receive the same regular mail-outs sent to members, including Myoju (the quarterly Jikishoan magazine), calendar, teaching program schedules, brochures and invitations to special events.

Jikishoan Aims and Objectives
 
Aims
i) To promote the teachings, practice and realisation of Shakyamuni Buddha in Australia for the welfare and peace of all.
 
ii) To encourage the teachings, methods and practice of all the Buddhas, ancestors and patriarchs associated with the Zen Schools of the Mahayana tradition.
 
iii) To promote, encourage, develop and assist the study and practice of Zen Buddhism in Australia with special emphasis on the teachings and methods of Eihei Dogen-zenji, the founder of the Soto Zen School in Japan.
 
Objectives
i) To install and support a resident teacher certified in the Soto Zen Buddhist tradition who is qualified to be the abbot or head priest for the community and who may officiate various duties and services such as lay and monastic ordinations, weddings, funerals and blessings.
 
ii) To establish a teaching program, practice program and a program of community activities for Jikishoan's members, and when necessary, to establish a training program, practice program and support system for assistant teachers.
 
iii) To invite teachers from the same or other traditions to participate in Jikishoan's teaching program, practice program and other community activities in order to promote greater awareness and understanding of Buddhism.
 
iv) To establish, under the guidance of the resident teacher, a Zen training structure including an administrative structure based upon Dogen-zenji's pure standard for Zen communities and upon other Soto Zen Buddhist guidelines, adapting them where necessary to meet local cultural requirements.
 
v) To conduct Zen Buddhist ceremonies, social functions and fund raising activities to support Jikishoan's members and to further Jikishoan's aims and objectives.
 
vi) To plan, acquire, provide, maintain and dispose of property, facilities, ceremonial instruments and practice-related items as necessary to meet the requirements of Jikishoan's teaching programs, practice programs and other community activities.
 
vii) To establish a process for identifying, addressing and resolving problems and conflicts among Jikishoan's members in order to maintain the harmony of member practice and the effectiveness of administration.
 
viii) To devise, maintain and revise as appropriate the official records of Jikishoan's activities, to include but not be limited to: the agendas and minutes of meetings; a membership register; a mailing list; a record of training and practice activities; an asset register; and, financial and other records to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act, 1981.
 
ix) To provide financial or non-financial support, where appropriate and necessary, to other organisations from the same or other traditions in order to achieve the aims of Jikishoan to promote greater awareness and understanding of Buddhism.
